We had a meeting with a speech therapist, Adina, on August 15 to start the process of getting an eye gaze device for communication. To go through insurance, there is a process involved, starting with getting a full assessment. While it can take 3 months for the whole process, we are excited that it has started! We spent about 2 hours with Adina discussing options and letting Jason actually use the computers to see what works best. Eye gaze software works by moving a cursor by just moving eyes. There is no "click," but a certain amount of time that the eye stays on one place selects that option. The device Jason picked will connect to his work computer, can connect to any infrared (IR) enabled device in the house, can connect to the internet, email, a Kindle... IR wireless is the use of wireless technology in devices or systems that convey data through IR radiation, an electromagnetic energy at a wavelength. Examples of common infrared devices are TV remote, cordless keyboards and mouse, and a Wii remote. He can type out phrases and the machine will voice what he types. He can change TV channels. We think he can connect a phone too (but Apple doesn't use eye gaze software) It does more than I can remember as I'm typing!

Jason has picked the Accent 1400!

We will be increasing our "goal" on our personal donation site because we anticipate that insurance may only cover 60% We will not know until the process gets future along, but we want to start raising funds. We need to start learning what all we can change to infrared for Jason to control :)
