Maine

Since Jason moved to Georgia in 2009, he has never missed going to Maine in the summer and for Christmas (well, he missed Christmas DAY one year in 2015, but still went in the winter). This year is no exception. We began our drive to Maine on Monday, July 3. We drove to Tarboro, NC and stayed with my parents Monday and Tuesday nights. Then we started the 2 day drive from NC to Windham, ME. Of course, before ALS, Jason would have insisted on taking turns driving and doing the trip in one day while getting up at 3am to start! But with ALS, things have changed. For example, a 7 hour driving day on Wednesday took us 9.5 hours. It just takes some extra time. We spent weeks planning mentally for the trip, how best to do it, and made sure all supplies and medication would be delivered prior to leaving.

Being our break day was July 4th (I may have nudged this off day, because I love this holiday!) we watched fireworks in NC and we saw a lot of family being most people were off for the day.

Visiting with my Daddy-4th of July gear!

We picked to stay just outside NYC on Wednesday night on the NJ side of the George Washington Bridge at the Hudson River. We got a skyline view for the last 20 minutes or so of our drive up I-95 to the hotel. Also, Mama made me both supper and lunch for the next day! After getting to the hotel so late, this was a much needed sandwich!

After getting to Maine and relaxing for the night, we spent late Friday afternoon outside. Jason's niece was over for a sleep over, so we went on a short neighborhood walk. Jason's parents and Emma rode bikes around the cul-de-sac, while I sat in Jason's lap and we raced them on the power wheelchair. We will make sure to get pictures of this later in our trip because we missed doing it on this day. There is nothing that Jason's mother, Diana, did not remember to make us as comfortable as possible. After spending weeks with us back in May, she knew all the things we would want. To list just a few, she made sure we had extra washcloths and rented a recliner for Jason. She made sure I had chocolate and a throw blanket, which are requirements in my own personal happiness! HA! They cleared room in the downstairs bedroom for all our supplies and gear. As mentioned in the last post, friends built a ramp in the last few weeks in preparation of us coming. Below are pictures taken of Tim and Mike putting in the ramps. After getting here and seeing in person---they are such an amazing design and look so good! We look forward to spending a few weeks with family and friends in Maine.
